Crif - Statement following French President Emmanuel Macron declaration

On Thursday, October 24, 2024, Crif President Yonathan Arfi published a statement regarding French President Emmanuel Macron words on Israel's military policy.

Paris, October 24, 2024

Excess and waste.

Never in history has a democracy accused another democracy of "sowing barbarism".

Never in France has a President of the Republic had such words towards our allies, whatever the disagreements and divergences.

For French Jews, these words are felt as a wound and as a legitimization of the most radical and hateful remarks of political far left La France Insoumise towards Israel, which have resulted for a year in a stigmatization of Jews and the release of the most dangerous antisemitic acts.

No one, in a democracy, likes war. But the outrageous words used by the President of the Republic symbolically contrast the real barbarians of Hamas and Hezbollah, who massacred, mutilated and raped civilian populations, and the response of a democracy under attack.

These words are unacceptable to all those who have the fight against terrorism at heart, starting with the families of hostages and all French people who have suffered in their flesh from the attacks of the Islamic State in our country.

The deterioration of the personal relationship between the President of the Republic and the Israeli Prime Minister, which everyone perceives, cannot justify these remarks.

The relationship between France and Israel as well as the current situation in the Middle East require more than this assumed and thoughtless escalation.

Mr. President of the Republic, when will there be words to soothe and heal the wounds?
