CHIRAC TO AUSCHWITZ COMMEMORATION, FRENCH PM TO IZIEU

French President Jacques Chirac will attend the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz extermination camp in Poland this Thursday. He invited CRIF's President Roger Cukierman and CRIF's Director General Haim Musicant to join him.

Pope John Paul II appointed Jean-Marie Cardinal Lustiger, Archbishop of Paris, to represent him at the ceremony. The Jewish-born Cardinal lost his mother and several members of his father's family in Auschwitz.

French Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin will attend Monday a ceremony in memory of the Jewish children of Izieu (Center of France). The 44 children hidden in the village were denounced by a neighbor, arrested by the Gestapo and sent to extermination camps. None survived. The commemoration will also be attended by CRIF's Director General Haim Musicant
