Here and there one hears the objection “But that’s history”, no doubt arising from the “duty to forget” which has been gaining more and more foothold in Auschwitz-weary consciences because of the perpetual watchfulness imposed upon us by the awful persistence of evil.
“There are no words to describe the outrage of this destruction of man”.
But there are words to say that we will rise up against barbarity.
There are words to say that we will resist.
There are words to say that we will behave as humans who respect their neighbours.
Is this not, after all, one of the lessons of Auschwitz?
