The meeting took place in the presence of Albania’s ambassador to France, H.E. Illjet Aliçka.
Salih Berisha, who was Albania’s President from 1992 to 1997, spoke with his hosts of his feelings about the new Union for the Mediterranean, of his hopes of seeing Albania one day join the European Union and of his pride in seeing his country enter the modern era. Relations with Israel are excellent and Israeli academics are regularly visiting the Albanian capital for conferences and symposia. Many Jews of Albanian origin are currently established in Israel and are regularly coming back to their country of birth for tourism or business purposes.
Plans were also discussed for an exhibition in a prestigious Parisian venue, retracing the saving of Albanian Jews during the dark era of the Holocaust.
