The purpose of the “Aladdin” project, a totally novel initiative by the Foundation for Remembering the Holocaust, is to fight the negationism and anti-Semitism that prevail in Islamic countries. To this end, programmes dealing with the history of the Holocaust, Jewish culture, relations between Jews and Muslims, together with Arabic, Persian and Turkish translations of such classics as “Anne Franck’s Diary” or the works of Primo Levi are being made available on the websites of www.aladdinproject.org and www.aladdinlibrary.org, with the hope that they will eventually replace the “Protocols of the Sages of Zion”, “Mein Kampf” and other texts that are very fashionable in bookstores in many Arab-Muslim countries.
For former President Jacques Chirac, one of the project’s sponsors, “Aladdin” is legitimate. “Aladdin is light, the symbol of the knowledge that we believe in together.”
