DOCUMENTARY FILM ON ANTI-SEMITISM STARTED POLEMIC

The television broadcast of Elie Chouraqui's documentary film on children of a Jewish school being attacked by Muslim pupils from a nearby state-run secondary school in Montreuil, a Paris suburb, started a heated polemic (see last CRIF's Newsletter).

CRIF said it was surprised by the criticism levelled at the film directors and authors. "Their report is realistic, sensible and soft touched about a regrettable, disturbing but sadly undeniable reality. No one denies the efforts of the Education Department, the local authorities or the headmasters to fight against the scourge of anti-Semitism. However, it is not by denying the facts that real progress will be achieved in teaching respect for others. Teaching tolerance is the challenge of the 21st Century," said CRIF.
