On the previous day, former Prime Minister of Israel met Nicolas Sarkozy. He said that his meeting with the President of the Republic had been "friendly". Although Colonel Gadhafi's visit had been mentioned, the discussion with the Head of State had mainly been about Iran and on what could be done following the Annapolis meeting.
Benjamin Netanyahu said that the recent American 150-page report on Iran is much less categorical than the published extracts. This shows the tensions that are appearing among American leaders.
Commenting on the Annapolis meeting, Benyamin Netanyahu believed that there is no question of going back to the 1967 borders. Israel must have safe and dependable borders. The retreat from Gaza was, in his own words, "a failure", because Hamas, which is now in charge, is only the other face of Iran.
As for the Palestinian leaders, in Benyamin Netanyahu's opinion, they are weak and incapable of recognising Israel as a Jewish State. Given this, what solution should be envisaged? He believes that the solution must be through economic peace, which is the opposite of what had been imagined. Jordan and Egypt must be involved, but a major obstacle remains: corruption. The leader of the Likoud then mentioned Theodor Herzl and Vladimir Jabotinsky, and exclaimed: "Whatever happens, security must stay within Israel's hands. We have to be realistic if we want to achieve real peace and not virtual peace".
Interviewed by Jean-Pierre Allali on the international action of JJAC (Justice for Jews from Arab Countries), Benyamin Netanyahu said that it was urgent to talk about this. "This has to be on the agenda immediately", he commented.
