The aim of this “first” was to establish a bridge between Judaism and Buddhism in France. Though it is difficult to put exact figures on French Buddhism, it would seem that with some 600,000 followers it is more or less equal to Judaism. According to certain studies, it is our country’s fourth or fifth religion.
Addressing the members of the Committee, Dordji Jigmé and Stéphane Grès took it in turns to describe the main lines of Buddhism, which includes numerous strands. Dordji Jigmé strongly reminded those present of the Dalai Lama’s deep commitment to Israel and Judaism, which constitute for him a model of faithfulness and courage in the face of a particularly painful history. For a better understanding of Buddhism, in particular its Tibetan variety, Dodji Jigmé invited the Jewish community to visit the great Tibetan festival that for several years now has been organized in September in the Bois de Vincennes Park.
