CRIF wishes to pay tribute to outgoing Chief Rabbi Joseph Haim Sitruk, who will officially terminate his mandate at the end of 2008, after twenty one years devoted to the cause of French Judaism, to teaching our fundamental texts to the widest possible number of people, and of unfailing support for the State of Israel. We know that Chief Rabbi Sitruk will continue to dedicate himself to the Community with which he has established such strong links.
As Jean Kahn comes to the end of his thirteen year mandate at the head of France’s Central Consistory, following six years during which he lead our own institution, CRIF wishes to recall the exemplary action of a man who by his dedication to all the facets of Jewish life has marked the history of our community.
CRIF extends its sincere best wishes of success to new Chief Rabbi Gilles Bernheim, who as Chief Rabbi of the Victoire Synagogue in Paris, as Director of the Torah and Society Department of the Paris Consistory and Vice-President of the Jewish-Christian Friendship Association, has contributed for many years to the dialogue leading to a better understanding between the Communities in our country. Thanks to his courses and books he has also contributed to the influence of Judaism in France and in the world.
CRIF extends its congratulations to Dr Joel Mergui, President of the Paris Consistory and a CRIF delegate for the Hauts-de-Seine département, and a militant community leader for all the great Jewish causes.
We are convinced that having at the head of French Judaism’s religious institution two men who have shared with CRIF so many joint struggles can only lead to a closer cooperation between CRIF, the Central Consistory and the France’s Chief Rabbinate and will encourage the return of the Central Consistory as a member of CRIF.
