“The beginning of your mandate coincided with the moment when the Catholic Church in the Alpes Maritimes Region decided to structure and develop its relations with Judaism. You immediately responded positively to this desire and committed yourself to fulfilling it,” said Monsignor Sankalé, adding that, during her six years as president of the regional chapter of CRIF, Ms Ouaknine’s contribution in “the religious field” “remained consistently secular, as required by the statutes of CRIF”.
In her response, Martine Ouaknine expressed her “hope that Jewish-Christian dialogue, under the auspices of spiritual reconciliation, might have long years ahead as strong as the roots of a tree. In a few days time we shall be celebrating the new year of trees: I felt it was symbolic to offer you one.”
This award ceremony was preceded by the annual consultation, in the Bishop’s palace, between the Jewish and Catholic institutions. Once a year, at the initiative of the diocesan service for interfaithreligious relations, a number of priests and leaders of church movements and diocesan services meet with rabbis and leaders of Jewish organisations to assess the initiatives undertaken during the preceding year and plan for the following year.
