EJC reaffirms its attachment to Jerusalem

Presided by Moshe Kantor, delegates from all over Europe gathered to discuss the results of the Durban II conference and the recent European elections. They also discussed issues such as the candidacy of the Egyptian Minister of Culture, Farouk Hosni, to the position of Director General of UNESCO, not forgetting the three years of captivity of Gilad Shalit.

Following a proposal made by CRIF, the EJC adopted a resolution on Jerusalem, saying that “The European Jewish Congress (EJC) and the 42 affiliated Jewish communities it represents recognise the sovereignty of the State of Israel, a democratic state of which Jerusalem is the historic capital. It is in this spirit that the European Jewish Congress reaffirms the attachment of European Judaism to the centrality of the city of Jerusalem for the Jewish people as a whole in its historical, religious and cultural dimension, and reiterates the need for the city of Jerusalem to remain single, undivided and united. Peace negotiations concerning the State of Israel must take into account the centrality of the city of Jerusalem for the Jewish people and its universal character for the other monotheistic religions, in particular Christians and Muslims.”
