By soiling this symbolic memorial with swastikas, the culprits aimed to spit in the face of the Jews deported from Drancy to the death camps. They also sought to be offensive to today’s Jews, who were celebrating Pessah, the Jewish Passover. They were also seeking to offend Drancy as a town, because it is a laboratory for dialogue between the various constituent members of the French nation. More than that, it was an insult to the whole of France, because the Memorial is a place for remembering and for education.
CRIF has taken note that Minister of Home Affairs Michèle Alliot-Marie has condemned in the strongest terms this profanation of the Drancy camp. CRIF hopes that the culprits will soon be found and subjected to exemplary sentencing.
