The President of CRIF told the Cardinal Archbishop of Paris that he had been satisfied with Benedict XVI’s speech, given in the very same place where John Paul II had spoken in 1986.
Richard Prasquier focussed on the Pope’s clear reaffirmation of his commitment to Vatican II and his determination to “pursue the irrevocable path of dialogue, fraternity and friendship”. The President of CRIF particularly appreciated Benedict XVI’s call to working together around the teaching of the Ten Commandments. Richard Prasquier noted that the Pope had found the right words to refer to the persecution of Italian Jews during the Holocaust.
Richard Prasquier and André Vingt-trois also discussed the project to beatify Pope Pius XII. The two men agreed that, whatever the current difficulties and differences of approach to the issue, friendly and frank discussions are still the best guarantee for enriching the dialogue between Jews and Catholics.
