Sarkozy’s proposal: results in two months time

Most of the participants had already expressed their opinion in the media concerning the proposal made by President Sarkozy, during the recent CRIF dinner. Their positions had been quite diverse. However, quite quickly a “median” position emerged, which took into account the very generous nature of this humanistic project while recognising the need for it to be supported by a strong involvement on the part of the teachers. Furthermore, the participants in this fruitful and consensual meeting proposed that the project be taken up at the level of whole classes, that it should also include children who were saved and stories of the Righteous, that the European dimension be not forgotten, that the children should be able to pursue some form of historical research on the subject and that the universal meaning of the Holocaust be highlighted. The commission will continue to work on this basis and produce its conclusions toward the month of May.
