Dominique Baudis, the former president of the Higher Council for Audio-Visual Communication (CSA, the French equivalent to the US FCC and the British IBA), expressed his interest for this proposal. With Roger Cukierman, who was accompanied by the General Director of CRIF, Haim Musicant, he discussed possible avenues for such a proposal. President Cukierman underlined the fact that CRIF supports the initiative undertaken by Rabbi Sarfati, which seeks to bring the Jewish and Muslim communities closer.
In a related issue, Jean-Pierre Allali, a member of CRIF’s Executive Board and National Coordinator for the JJAC’s action which will be taking place in France, under the aegis of CRIF, from March 2007 to March 2008, published, with CRIF’s support, an updated version of his study first published in 2005, on Jewish refugees in Arab-Muslim countries. The book, entitled “Exchanged refugees. Sepharads-Palestinians”, after describing the difficult condition of Jews in Muslim lands down the centuries, shows that a de facto exchange took place, as has often been the case throughout history, between two equally important population groups, the Palestinian refugees and Jewish refugees in Arab countries. This being the case, the claim to a “right of return” for Palestinian refugees and their descendants, in Israel, which is continually being put forward by the Palestinian leadership, can only hamper the search for a just and lasting peace.
