The death of Papon: a page of the history of collaboration is turned

At the very moment when France is commemorating the Righteous, whose admirable behavior stands as a witness to the fact that it was possible to do otherwise, the Papon case is a reminder that a part of the French administration, in total agreement with the Nazi occupier, put on file, hunted down, deported and despoiled the Jews who were on French soil.

Maurice Papon’s indifference and absence of regrets toward his victims show the permanence of a story that is still painful and needs to continue to be looked squarely in the eye.
