On this occasion, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Bernard Kouchner, accompanied by the philosopher André Glucksman, awarded the Legion of Honour to the man who, together with Mordekhai Anielewicz, symbolised the desperate fight by young Jewish combatants against Nazi barbarianism, for the honour of the Jewish people and for human dignity. Having chosen to continue to live in the land where so many Jews were reduced to ashes, Marek Edelman participated with all his energy in the advent of democracy in present day Poland. A number of years ago he had been invited to a symposium organised by the French National Library. His legendary figure will forever be inscribed in Jewish history.
