Simone Veil, a former president of the European Parliament, and herself a former deportee, addressed the young people present: “I am confident because thanks to what you are doing together with your teachers and the Ministry of Education, we can keep hoping that this will never happen again.”
CRIF was represented by Claude Hampel, deputy chair of the memorial commission.
On Tuesday 26th May 2009, in the courtyard of the Hospitaliers Saint-Gervais elementary school, in the heart of Paris’ Jewish quarter, facing the plaque honouring Righteous among the Nations Joseph Migneret, a former principal of the school, was held a moving ceremony presided by Milo Adoner, a former pupil of the school, who, having survived deportation, is now actively engaged in promoting the importance of remembering.
Milo Adoner began reading the long list of first and family names of the 324 boys and girls deported and exterminated because they were Jews. Today’s pupils then continued the reading of the names of the pupils who had gone before them and laid white roses in their memory.
