WE MUST DO MORE FOR JEWS ORIGINATING FROM ARAB COUNTRIES

In two successive meetings, these leaders talked about remembrance and the rights of Jewish refugees from Islamic territories: topical events, awareness raising among national, European and worldwide political leaders, meetings with the new Israeli leadership that will come out of the elections in February 2009, symposia in France and other countries.

Careful analysis was also done of the position expressed recently by the Israeli orthodox party Shas. The Minister for Religious Affairs, Yitzhak Cohen, speaking at Bar-Ilan University, said the party intended to launch a major awareness raising campaign on the issue of Jewish refugees from Arab countries, specifying that no future peace deal between Israelis and Palestinians would be allowed to keep silent about the tragedy of Jews originating from Arab Muslim nations.

Stanley Urman was accompanied by Sylvain Abitbol, a member of the JJAC global Executive and President of the Canadian Jewish Congress. The latter also gave some very interesting indications about the very close relations which have built up over the years between Canada’s Jewish community and the representatives of Native Indians.
