Following this meeting, the representatives of Jewish institutions said they were reassured about the future of relations between Jews and Roman Catholics by the statements made to clarify the situation following the uproar raised by the lifting of the excommunication of four bishops belonging to the Fraternity of Saint Pius X, one of whom, Richard Williamson, had expressed negationist opinions.

After meeting with Cardinal Kasper, Richard Prasquier, President of CRIF, and the representatives of the World Jewish Congress said that “the Williamson affair will soon be over and will not, in the long term, weigh on relations between Jews and Catholics”.

In a press release published today, Richard Prasquier and Maram Stern, General Secretary of the World Jewish Congress said “We pay tribute to the many Roman Catholics, both priests and laity, who share our dismay and have assured us that they are determined to continue with us on the path of brotherhood and hope.”

The President of CRIF was also able to give assurances that “discussions about Benedict XVI’s planned trip to Israel are continuing” and that the Williamson affair would not call the visit into question.
